VW says fuel cell cars will struggle beyond Japan

Volkswagen predicts that cars powered by hydrogen fuel cells will probably struggle to catch on beyond Japan’s borders, according to an article in Automotive News.

Toyota is preparing to launch its first  fuel cell car in Japan, priced at about $69,000. The Japanese government is offering subsidies up to $28,500 a vehicle, a figure that Volkswagen says is probably too high for other countries to match.

Fuel cell cars, which only emit water vapor, are considered one of the best ways to reduce carbon emissions, but there is a growing divide within the auto industry over which technology will prevail in replacing traditional gasoline and diesel cars.
